Polarisation of the Debate in Migration Policy: A Cautionary Tale for Liberal Democracies

Feb 25, 2026 | Migration Narratives, Publications

MedMA talks with Frank Sharry, consultant with British Future & formerly Principal Advisor on Immigration Policy to the Kamala Harris for President Campaign, on how migration politics is ultimately a battle of stories: right-wing populists push a simple “they’re taking from us/they threaten us” narrative, while pro-rights advocates face the harder task of showing that treating refugees and immigrants humanely and integrating them as full members of society serves the broader interests and values of the whole community. The core message is that advocates must find an authentic public-facing voice, acknowledging legitimate concerns, respecting the rule of law and due process, and offering “common-sense” solutions, so politicians can defend a balanced approach of reasonable controls plus genuine compassion and expanded protection.
