The event, entitled “Human Rights Protection Systems in Europe: A Practical View of Their Effectiveness in the Face of European Challenges”, brought together a diverse group of legal practitioners and human rights defenders to discuss pressing issues across the continent.

The panel discussion, “Experiences in the Use of European Human Rights Systems and Their Impact in the Field of Migration, Climate Justice, and Digitalization,” featured several panelists:

  • Climate Justice: Jaime Doreste, Lawyer for Ecologists in Action.
  • Digitalization and Vulnerable Groups: Thomas Lohninger, Executive Director of Epicenter Works.

During the panel, Medma’s Director, Markos Karavias, shared insights from the Greek experience, emphasizing the pivotal role of strategic litigation in driving policy changes. He discussed:

  1. The critical work of lawyers and their influence on national and European policies in the area of migration.
  2. The Chowdhury litigation before the ECHR and its role in shaping migration policy in Greece.
  3. The significance of the EU Charter in the context of the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, illustrating how strategic legal frameworks and decisions are pivotal in developing comprehensive and humane migration policies.
